When a new chin comes to your home, its hard to get all excited and want to play with it, however, you should atleast give the chin a day or so to explore its new cage without you around. Then you should start by just sitting by the cage and reading a book or some other quite activity. After the chin gets used to seeing you, start sitting your hand in the cage palm up, with half a raisin, and let it begin getting use to your hand. Before long it will be climbing on your hand and once you think its comfortable with you, you should attempt to let it play in a chin proofed room or bathroom, or even setup a playpen if you have one. Before long your chinchilla will want to inspect you, and not long after your chin will more than likely be climbing all over you.
Remember, if you chase your chinchilla with your hands, it will take it much longer to get your little friend use to you. The key is to be very patient. If your chin is a shy chin, just continue letting it play with you and bribe it with treats, toys and even dustbaths. With enough time, the chin will get used to you. |
