Bumble foot is the result of an infection under the calluses on a chinchillas feet. When calluses crack open they allow for infection to get underneath the skin and then form infection pockets, which will eventually bust open and bleed. This is extremely uncomfortable for the chin. Signs include cracked rough feet that also look pink, and of course a bleeding foot is always an indication.
What to do:
- if you suspect your chin has overly dry feet, use bag balm, jojoba or vitamin E oil to help keep feed moisturized.
- If you have a wire ledged cage, provide plenty of mats for the chin to rest on. While wire cages are not the sole contributor to bumble foot, irritation from the wires on the foot is a factor.
- If you have a chin suffering from what you believe has bumble foot, make sure any blood is from the foot, and not the result of a splinter or a toe that's been bit
- If it is bumble foot, clean the infection with a warm cloth, and apply a very thin layer of Neosporin to the area.
- Change the bedding and disinfect the cage, then continue to clean any urine spots and feces of the shelf
- If there is no improvement, or the condition worsens, seek the advice of your local vet |
