Before you begin breeding, there are many things you need to carefully consider first. Responsible breeding is much more than just placing any two chins together and hoping for healthy kits.
Some important things to consider are:
1. Are you financially prepared to pay for any emergencies that you might encounter, such as a breeched birth or c-section? Do you even have a local vet that specializes in chinchillas?
2. Are you aware of the risk involved for both mom and the kits? While the majority of chin pregnancies have no issues, problems do happen, which can result in vet bills or possibly even death.
3. Are you prepared to hand feed or rotate kits if the mom is unable to care for them? This is a 24/7 job for about the first 6 weeks, and if you do not think that you have the time or energy to replace a chin mom, you should definately reconsider breeding.
4. Do you understand how to improve the quality of chinchillas? Breeding undesirable traits can result in unhealthy chins.
5. Are you prepared to find homes for the babies once they are weaned? It's very important to screen any potential buyers, and to be selective to whom you sell.
6. Are you getting into breeding to make "fast cash"? If so, be prepared to be disappointed, as most breeders do good to break even on the cost of care.
These are just some of the main things you should consider, and we recommend doing as much research as possible before even considering starting a breeding program.
