To prepare for a litter takes a lot of time and should be started well before the first expected due date.
Baby proofing a cage – The wire spacing should be no bigger than 1 ½” by 1”. There should be no shelves or anything that mom can climb on top. You should build or purchase a nest box and also provide a small enclosure that only kits can fit into, just in case mom decides to run around the cage. The cage should also not be very tall, at most 24”.
Also keep in mind that if kits begin to fight or mom rejects the kits, you will need to have back up baby proofed cages for kits. This can take up a lot of room and time, so please consider this before breeding.
It is also a good idea to have the supplies to make a supplement if you need to. Please visit the nutrition page or supplemental page for more information. |
