   Supplementing

If for any reason you are left raising a baby chin(s) without the help of a chin mom the responsibility of hand rearing is on you. You will have to supplement them for quite a long time, and for information on that visit the supplementing page. Also provide them a secure baby proof cage, with a heating pad under one half to help keep them warm. Make sure you provide plenty of room where the kit can get away from the heating pad in case it gets too hot. Still provide hay and pellets.

You will also have to help stimulate the baby's bodily functions, which the mom usually does by licking the area. Simply take a warm, wet cotton ball and rub the baby's genitalia with it gently. This will help the baby to defecate. You will need to do this frequently for the first two weeks. I recommend doing this after supplementing.

You can introduce them to a dust bath after a week. I like to use a smaller, open dusting pan for kits. I simply take the kit, set it in the dust, and sprinkle a little on its back. Soon enough instinct will kick in and the kit will start rolling in it! Some babies take longer than others, so be patient if you have a “slow learner”.

If you only have one kit that is being supplemented, make sure you provide safe stuffed animal to cuddle with, I recommend using one made of fleece with no buttons or plastic on it.
